Our First House

Today marks our five year "first home" anniversary. We closed on this house on July 8, 2005, and we were SO EXCITED! We had lived in this town for just a year, had our first baby, and Josh had taught his first year as a math teacher. Something told us that we would stay here - at least a little while - and we wanted a house of our own. So after being married just shy of four years, we became home owners.

I am a little sentimental about this place. There are days when I'd love something bigger - more bedrooms, a basement, a fireplace, vaulted ceilings...all kinds of upgrades so-to-speak! But I know in my heart of hearts that it will be hard to leave when the day comes.

We brought Sarah and Gabriel home from the hospital to this house (which means I was ridiculously sick being pregnant twice in this house).

All three of them learned to walk here.

All three of them had their first birthdays here.

We built their first play set here.

Caleb and Sarah learned how to ride a bike on the street in front of our house.

Caleb had his first loose tooth here. He learned to write his name here, learned to read here.

We had our first ER experience with a child as a result of something that happened in this house.

Caleb and Sarah potty trained here. (I hope Gabriel does, too!)

So many things...the list could go on...

But most of all...we just spent time making it our own.

Whether it was painting...or time spent together with each other...

I know it's just a house. There's bound to be another house in my future, because who knows what the future holds. But I know someday, many years from now, I will drive by this place and smile. It holds so many memories for me. I get choked up just thinking about it.

How do you feel about your first house?

Times Have Changed

Are you a nursing mother? Bottoms up! (My grandma actually mentioned this when I first started nursing. I told her it wasn't exactly what my doctor recommended.)

Who says smoking is bad for you? (This doesn't surprise me.)

I'm in the chubbies club. (Can you even imagine this terminology being ok?)

Fingernail Polish and Being Girly

Josh took the kids outside to play yesterday evening, and I stayed inside for a few minutes while I finished painting my finger nails. As I sat on the couch, my task almost complete, I heard Sarah come in from the deck door. She walked into the living room, sat down beside me and said, "Mommy, will you paint my fingernails, too?"

My heart leapt with joy. Really.

She is almost four, but this was the first time she had ever shown interest in painting her nails. I have offered many, many times. I've tried to show her pretty pink colors (because she LOVES pink) with no success. I chalk it up to her having a big brother...he encourages her to play with dinosaurs and Batman you know.

But for whatever reason, she initiated the painting process yesterday. And it was so fun. After I finished her fingernails, she asked me to do her toenails, too!

What a fun "first" yesterday. I was giddy about it all evening. And as we took a walk together as a family, she just had to stop by Miss Kim's house to show her. Of course, Miss Kim was as sweet as can be and told her how beautiful she looked.

She does look beautiful. Every day.

So perhaps my little girl will be a little girly after all. With two brothers, there's no telling!

As I wrote the last line of this blog entry, Sarah came walking into our room and said, "Mommy, will you help me put on this Batman costume?" I just had to laugh!

Wicked and the 4th

We saw WICKED yesterday. Simply amazing. Loved it. We also enjoyed our dinner before the show very much! I'm so glad I finally had a chance to eat at the resturant at the theater; I've always wanted to do that.

But my favorite picture from our outing yesterday was this one of my sister's boyfriend. He and Josh could be BFF's.

I saw that some of my bloggy friends posted pictures of past 4th of July events. It shows how much our kids have grown to see these, that's for sure! My favorite past 4th picture is this one:

It was July 4, 2008, and I was five months prego with Gabriel. So technically, he's in this picture, too!

This is such a cute picture of Sarah from that day...she's so little!

And here she is today...

They just change SO MUCH.

So then I made the kids go outside today so I could take their picture next to a tree in our front yard. That didn't work (Gabriel likes to wonder off) so I had to settle for a picture on my front porch instead. It's ok, it reminds me of the song lyrics, "And the view I love the most is my front porch looking in!"

I baked a gooey butter cake today for our small group gathering. It's seriously the only thing I'm good at in the kitchen!

Happy 4th!

There She Stands

In honor of this weekend, I'd like to share this song with you. It brings tears to my eyes each time I hear it. If you've never heard it or seen the video, I'd encourage you to listen and watch.

And be thankful for this country.

"Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD..."
Psalm 33:12

Looking forward to the weekend...

Two weeks in a row with Mama M!

1. What is one thing you miss the most about childhood? My house. I still drive by it. I actually have dreams about it. So weird. But I guess I just have so many memories there, it's hard for it not to be a part of my childhood's past. I remember leaving my bedroom window open in late spring/early summer and hearing softball and baseball games at night (if you live in the area, I lived on a hill up the road from Forum Drive and could hear games at Ber Juan park). I loved watching my dad put up Christmas lights and helping my mom put up the tree. I remember playing catch in the yard, playing dolls with my sister in our room, helping dad bring in wood from outside. So many things, and even though the house is just a house, it held the memories. I've told my husband that it would be SO HARD for me not to want to buy that house if it ever went on the market.

2. Are you still friends with your friends from high school? I don't see them hardly ever since we are all spread out across the state (and some outside the state and outside the country!), but I have kept in touch with a few over the years via email, and since I joined facebook in 2007, I have found people that I never thought I'd see again! I don't live in my home town, and I went to college where no one else from my high school went (my age anyway...well, besides Josh!) so keeping in touch meant seeing each other at weddings and (sadly) funerals.

3. Is there a catch phrase, cliche, or word that just drives you bonkers every time you hear it? It used to be "Git r done" but thank goodness that's mostly gone! I also don't like "You know what I mean?" when someone is talking to me, especially if it's frequent in their conversation. But the phrase I dislike the most is probably "God won't give you more than you can handle" - I blogged about that phrase here.

4. What is one thing that you think symbolizes America...besides "Old Glory"?

"Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free. The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me. I lift my lamp beside the golden door."

5. What are your 4th of July weekend plans? On Saturday, Josh and I are traveling with my sister and her boyfriend to see WICKED at The Fox Theater in St. Louis. I simply LOVE going there, and I can't wait to see it. We are also eating at The Grand Buffet within the theater; this is something I've never done even though I've been to The Fox several times. I'm so excited!

Then on Sunday, our small group is having a gathering, and this time it's for the entire family! Usually we get together and our kids are watched somewhere else while the adults visit and have a study. This time we'll be bringing the kiddos for swimming, eating, and fireworks. I'm really looking forward to it.

So what do YOU do?

Sarah Markley, The Best Days of My Life

It’s the question that everyone asks. And if I, by chance, have a little distance between me and my children for an evening, and I’m just a woman seemingly clear of the wake of a family for a few minutes, someone might ask,

What do you do?

As if that defines me.

As if that makes me better than being “just a mother.”

As if it is assumed that one must have something bigger than merely motherhood to be counted as valuable. Because, let me tell you, most of motherhood is just plain tedious and un-sexy.

So my {edgy} post over at (in)courage is titled, Am I Sexy Enough?”

It was a mixed group. I didn’t know many of the people around the table as we all sat down to a late dinner. He sat at the corner of the table and he looked me straight in the eye. With giddy expectation he asked,

“So what’s your schtick?”

He was asking me what my “thing” was. My cause. What movement I am a part of. As if everyone needs to have a cause, or a blog badge or a little tiny photo in the corner of their twitter avatar.

Should I lie and say I speak out against human trafficking? Or impoverished children? Should I say that I build wells in Africa and my goal is for every human to have clean drinking water?

“Um, I’m a mom.”

It wasn’t enough for him, apparently, because his faced dulled and his eyes glazed as he glanced over to my friend and asked her the same question. Her answer was much more professional, eloquent and far more interesting.

They began a conversation and I fiddled with the damp napkin under my water glass. I tore off a piece and wadded it up into a ball.

I half listened to their conversation, half thought about what my “schtick” was. They laughed at something.

What I didn’t tell him was that I believe in the wholeness of marriages, that my heart is to see women and men live in the beautiful relationships God designed for them. I didn’t say that I write about the dangers of emotional affairs or pornography. I didn’t say that I want to see women and men fulfilled in God and not in sexual relationships.

I didn’t say any of that.

I told him I was a mother.

Just being a mother isn’t “sexy” enough for most people. It isn’t a worldwide cause or social movement. And even speaking and writing about marriage and relationships isn’t exciting enough for a lot of people either. There isn't anything living-on-the-edge about talking about kids and marriage.

As soon as I’m figured out, that I don’t really do anything more than mother, wife, write and occasionally speak, I’m shuffled to the back of some people’s minds as

less important,

not a “strategic” person to get to know,

unable to bring something worthwhile to the Christian table, or

simply boring.

What if my schtick were ONLY that I was a mother with all of the energy and intention possible, with as much gumption that I could muster, and with as much widespread love that my body could contain? It still might not be good enough. What if I were to do the best possible job at it? To impart truth and communicate grace, to sit on the floor of my 8 year old’s room and answer her big questions when it’s 30 minutes past her bedtime.

Is that an important enough cause for me to marry myself to?

I think it is.

I will do my best within MY calling. My calling may change over the course of my lifetime, but right now, today and in this upstairs bedroom as I type out this article, I know what I’m called to do.

I’m called to be a present mother. To be a proud wife. To write and speak words God gives me.

And that, I believe, is enough.

Two minutes from a movie that spoke volumes to me...

The first time I saw Mona Lisa Smile, it was years after it's release in 2003. It was probably only months after I resigned from my marketing posistion to stay home with my children in early fall of 2006. I remember having mixed feelings as the story line progressed, wondering if it was only about women who were encouraged to pursue a professional career by Julia Robert's character.

Then...I saw this scene...and I had tears:

"I know exactly what I'm doing and it doesn't make me any less smart."

There are often movie lines or scenes that stand out to us. This one has stood out to me for years. She articulates how I feel when I think about the fact that I did work hard to earn a bachelor's degree, work in my desired field, and then put it all aside to devote all of myself to my family. And it doesn't make me any less smart.

"She watches over the affairs of her household..." Proverbs 31:27

As I watched this scene several times after I finally found it on YouTube, I kept thinking, "Does Julia Robert's character really get it?" Do people like her really get it? I don't know. But that can't keep me from doing what I'm doing.

I love that scene.

*It's a 10-minute set, but it's only the first two minutes that capture what I'm talking about.
