Our Front Yard Dilemma

In the spring, I simply adore a Bradford Pear Tree.  We just happen to have two in our front yard.

When we first bought our house, they were baby trees.  I bet they had only been in the yard a year or two, seeing an old picture of our front yard made me realize how much they have grown.  When we listed our house back in June, the realtor had info from when we purchased the house, and with it was the listing picture from 2005.  I couldn't believe it.

Seven years have past, and now they have completely taken over the front of our house.  To get a picture that would work for our listing, they had to basically take the picture on the side of the house.  Otherwise, it would have looked like this:

I guess this is ok, but lately I just have been thinking that it would be nice for the front of the house to look more open.  I've also been thinking that I've never seen this type of tree so big!

Last year, we had a big storm that caused one of the trees to lose a huge limb.

Ever since then, that tree has seemed as though it's splitting down the middle.

The above picture shows how that three is almost the entire width of the front yard from the front of the house to the road!  And since there are two of them side by side, they also take up the entire front yard from the driveway to almost the property line on the other side.  Crazy!

So if this was your yard...would you hire a professional and trim them?  Or would you get rid of them completely and try to find a tree that is more suitable for our front yard?  I'm actually not even sure that our front yard can handle a tree once it starts getting big.  It's funny that I didn't realize how small our front yard is until recently.

And if your answer is hire a professional, then I need local friends to give me a name and number. :)

I researched trees not long ago and found that the Bradford Pear doesn't have a long life. They split and break. There were alternatives though:

I would take it completely out. Bradford Pears are beautiful, but don't last long before breaking or splitting. I would plant some pretty bushes or some smaller trees. You have a really pretty house, I think you should showcase it! :)

can't believe I'm saying this, but I vote for taking them out. redbuds or dogwoods grow very slowly and stay smaller... might try for one of those... or bushes. - Marcinda Redburn

I think I would take the broken tree out but not both - trees are something I look for when browsing houses (especially living in a town that had a tornado - mature trees are few and far between). Sorry I don't know any local professionals but sometimes this time of year people are looking to cut wood - maybe you can find someone who is responsible and will cut it down for less $$ if they get to keep the wood?

I had Patrick Frost with Elegant Landscaping LLC remove our Bradford Pear after a storm. He planted a redbud instead. He said Bradford's are beautiful but top heavy and weak. He does all our landscaping and removed a dead willow this summer.

If u decide against trees....we really love our butterfly bush....it attracts butterflies and has these pretty little flowers. It tried to die this year cuz was so dry and we don't usually water, it is survival of the fittest out here.... but we watered and it not only made it but rebloomed in fall. They don't get as tall as trees but would still provide some decor and privacy cover for house.....

Jim says have it taken out because they get diseased or break easily during storms. My mom has had to take hers out besause most of it came down in a storm. You don't want it on your house.
