Bunny Alternatives

On Wednesday night, while Caleb and Sarah were at AWANA's, Josh and I traveled to Wal-Mart with Gabriel for a few things...and to just walk around with "only one child" as we often do on Wednesday nights.

We really only needed milk and toilet paper. I could have just gone to the local grocery store for that, but I really needed my Wal-Mart fix (sorry, Tina, that I didn't call and ask if you needed anything)!

As we passed by the Easter aisle, I told Josh I wanted to look. I have no idea why I wanted to do this, usually I just become irritated with all the bunnies. You recall that I don't like Santa, I dislike the Easter Bunny more. But I've opted out of the anti-Easter-Bunny post for fear of the repercussions.

Ahem.

Anyway, as I turned to go down this aisle, I couldn't believe the new items in the "inspirational" section. Veggie Tales!

At first, I was thrilled. I mean, I have barely given my children anything in past Easters. They have received some nice, Christian-type things from my mom, but overall I just really don't understand the things that are promoted at Easter time. Chocolate and bunnies...what does that have to do with my Lord and Savior dieing on the cross, rising again, and saving me from eternal separation from Him?

Shoot, I'm sort of writing what I said I wouldn't.

Moving right along.

The Veggie Tale items were cute. They had Larry Boy lollipops for example. They had candy with all the characters on it that my kids recognize. It's a nice alternative to the bunnies, but after I thought about it, it's still candy and STUFF.

So thank you, Big Idea, for making items as an alternative to the bazillion bunnies that I usually see this time of year. I think it's a nice idea, but I'm still not sure I'll purchase any of it. I still don't understand all the STUFF that we feel compelled to BUY in honor of these holidays.

But that might just be me.

Especially after seeing blog posts like this and this, it's just really hard for me to think about buying baskets full of candy and things that don't even matter.

SO SO glad to see others feel the same way as we do! I keep re-going thru (is that a word?!?) my kids toys and donating/giving away more and more. Then I'm thinking my kids are 1 and 5. How many more Christmas can they keep getting more and more toys?? I don't even want to think about it. Why is it we are 'pressured' to do the commercial thing and buy and then its just junk we end up getting rid of. Vicious cycle! Nice there are alternatives out there though, but maybe they are just jumping on the bandwagon too??

No no no!!! Easter baskets are so much fun! We did have to celebrate on Saturday, NOT Resurrection Sunday, however. My mom would put goodies in an Easter hat for us or a ball cap. Usually they were fun things like candies or costume jewelry or crayons or something. Or windbreakers to wear over our Easter dresses in the cold weather! Or kites or ... well, you get the picture!

How do you feel about the chocolate crosses? I think they aren't quite as tasty as those little rabbits! They just don't get thin enough like those ears...

Also, loved to hunt Easter eggs. And dye them. I think they are just fun seasonal things, like drinking hot cocoa and sledding and trimming a tree are to Christmas holidays. I LOVE dragging out a one day holiday to a whole week/season!

I don't think we'll get our baby much for Easter this year, but I do want to start a tradition of setting something special aside to look forward to as the end of winter.

My husband's mom always buys a pack of socks and Reeses eggs for her grown sons. They look forward to it STILL! And I look forward to little gifts from my mother in law.

Chrissy, I think it might boil down to your love language. As you might tell, my love language is tokens of appreciation. This means, cards, notes, presents, flowers, and encouraging words. It sounds like these things are not really meaningful to you. Maybe your love language is service or spending time or physical touch (hugs!). I think I will strive to find out what my child's love language is and then try to over come my foreign langauge to it and show them it. That might mean I don't get to give little stickers and I just have to give him pats on the back or time together. I hope that at least one of my kids is MY love language, because I think its so much fun for me to express my love that way!

Mrs. Haid - my blog is just like Fox News...fair and balanced...so thank you for your perspective.

;o)

I hope that made someone laugh.

We dye eggs, but it's never really associated with Easter, I think I make it more of a "spring" thing. They hunt eggs at Mama and Papa's house, but I have never really put much emphasis on it being a part of Easter.

I know, I'm weird. I'm ok with it!

That is great. I like this idea! I don't know how to feel about the Easter bunny and baskets. I mean, we don't do the Easter bunny, but I mean the baskets. Grr..and it was hard because my sister-in-law invited us all to get a family picture with the easter bunny this year. We passed it up but I've never told her WHY. She reads my blog though. I guess it's time.
